Why Have a Written Health and Safety Policy?
All business with 5 or more employees are legally required by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (the UK's primary health and safety law) to have a written Health and Safety Policy.
However, there are a number of positive reasons for every business to have a written policy (and statement) including showing compliance with legal health and safety duties; reducing workplace risks and accidents; creating a safety culture; building employee trust and meeting customer expectations: and reducing insurance costs.
The Policy must include a Health and Safety Statement, detail responsibilities for implementation and monitoring of health and safety, and arrangements & procedures providing details of the measures taken to manage health and safety risks. A selection of Health and Safety Statements and Arrangements & Procedures are also available to match with these policies.
What is the Difference between these Health and Safety Policies?
The two Health and Safety Policies below both share similar structures and commitment to health and safety but differ in their scope, responsibilities and implementation due to the difference in business size and structure.
The Company Health and Safety Policy is structured for multiple employees, with clearly defined roles and responsibilities: It requires comprehensive compliance measures, including training, risk assessments, and designated responsibilities and includes financial commitments to health and safety.
The Sole Trader Health and Safety Policy is simpler and more focused on individual responsibility, with some delegation to subcontractors: It is more flexible, with the proprietor handling all health and safety matters personally and the sole trader is responsible for their own safety costs.
