Equal Opportunity, Diversity and Disability Discrimination

Provided below are two versions of an Equal Opportunity and Diversity Policy and a set of  Guidance Notes in respect of Disability Discrimination to help employers comply with the relevant legislation covering your responsibilities for an inclusive and equitable workplace, aligning both legal and ethical responsibilities. All these documents are compliant with The Equality Act 2010. There are considerable potential pitfalls for employers in managing their responsibilities under The Equality Act. Having proper policies and procedures in place and putting these into practice is essential for all businesses not only during the recruitment process but also throughout the employment relationship. The promotion of equality and prevention of discrimination covers a wide range of protected characteristics such as race, gender, age, disability, ethnicity, religion and more.

The consequences of getting things wrong with workplace discrimination issues can be serious in terms of the time spent fighting an employment tribunal claim and the financial penalty if you are found to have acted in a discriminatory manner: financial awards to successful claimants in discrimination cases are uncapped.

The standard Equal Opportunities and Diversity Policy has been kept up to date with current equality legislation and is compatible with data protection regulations. The Equality and Diversity Policy with Grievance and Disciplinary includes the same clauses but also contains grievance and disciplinary procedures which set out the steps to be taken by employees who feel that they have been subjected to discrimination; the action their employer must take in response; and the disciplinary consequences for those guilty of discriminatory conduct.

The Disability Discrimination Guidance Notes supplements Diversity Policies providing help to the employer to comply with equality legislation and deal with the employer's obligations to make reasonable adjustments once an employee has been identified as disabled under the Equality Act.
