Onboarding New Employees
Having provided an employment offer letter to a candidate it is essential to follow up with obtaining references, particularly from previous employment. This not only protects the business but confirms efficient practices within the recruitment process. An employment contract tailored to the employee's role will normally have been provided to the candidate with the offer letter. If not, the employment contract should be provided to the employee immediately when starting employment. It is a legal requirement that all new employees must receive a written statement of their particulars of employment, i.e. contract of employment, by the first day of their employment.
The new employee starter and induction documents below assist the onboarding process, establishing records of the employees' details as well as helping to get new employees settled into their roles, and introduced to the company's culture, policies and procedures. The application of the new starter form and induction policy, checklist and feedback form is a positive way by which to make new employees feel welcome, informed and prepared for their responsibilities within the business.
It is advisable also to provide access to staff handbook policies and safety procedures.
UK employers may use medical questionnaires for legitimate reasons, but must ensure such practices are not discriminatory and comply with legislation and ethical standards. Medical questionnaires should not be presented to candidates until they have received an employment offer letter. They cannot be used during the interview and selection process. Legitimate reasons include assessing fitness for the role, compliance with Health and Safety regulations, and planning for reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010.
